Dentists’ perceptions of factors influencing implant treatment demand according to tooth loss severity
Abstract
Aims: This study evaluated dentists’ perceptions of implant treatment demand and investigated factors perceived to influence patients’ decisions regarding implant therapy based on tooth loss severity.
Methods: In this cross-sectional survey, 78 practicing dentists completed a validated 12-item questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were calculated for all variables. Individual implant-related attitude items (Q8a-Q8f) were compared across five perceived tooth-loss categories using the Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by Dunn’s test with Bonferroni adjustment. Subgroup analyses according to specialty and clinical experience were performed using the Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests. Statistical significance was set at p<0.05.
Results: Dentists generally perceived greater implant demand among patients with extensive tooth loss, though a substantial proportion considered demand independent of missing teeth. Comparison of implant-related attitude items showed a significant difference only for positive opinion toward implant treatment (Q8a, p=0.002, ε2=0.183). Pairwise comparisons revealed that the 2-3 missing teeth group had significantly lower Q8a scores than both the ≥6 missing teeth group (adjusted p=0.0015) and the independent-demand group (adjusted p=0.0046). Subgroup analyses indicated that dentists with ≤5 years of experience perceived patient age (Q8c) as a significantly more critical factor than those with 6-15 years of experience (adjusted p=0.040). No other professional variables significantly affected attitudes.
Conclusion: Dentists’ positive opinions toward implant therapy and perceptions of patient age differ based on perceived tooth-loss severity and clinical experience. Perceived demand is shaped by diverse clinical and professional factors rather than tooth loss alone.
