Associations of chronotype with hedonic hunger, sleep quality and anthropometric measures in adult women

Abstract

Aims: Chronotype may influence eating behaviors and weight regulation; however, evidence in non-clinical female populations remains limited. This study examined the associations between chronotype, hedonic hunger, sleep quality, dietary intake, and anthropometric characteristics in adult females. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 374 females aged 19-64 years were recruited using convenience sampling in Karapınar, Konya, Turkiye. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the Power of Food Scale (PFS). Dietary intake was assessed using a single 24-hour dietary recall, and anthropometric measurements were obtained using standardized procedures. Associations between variables were evaluated using Pearson correlation analyses. Results: The mean BMI was 27.48±6.54 kg/m², and the mean PFS score was 2.83±0.77. Most participants were classified as intermediate chronotype (72.7%), followed by evening (24.6%) and morning types. Approximately 80% of participants had poor sleep quality (PSQI >5). Lower MEQ scores, indicating greater eveningness, were significantly associated with higher body weight, body-mass index, waist circumference, hip circumference, and waist-to-hip ratio. Higher MEQ scores (greater morningness) were positively correlated with protein, cholesterol, riboflavin, phosphorus, and zinc intake. MEQ scores also showed weak positive correlations with both PFS and PSQI scores. Conclusion: In this sample of adult females, greater eveningness was associated with less favorable anthropometric profiles, whereas greater morningness was linked to higher intake of several nutrients. These findings suggest that chronotype may be relevant to dietary and lifestyle behaviors. However, the cross-sectional design precludes causal inference. Longitudinal studies using objective measures are needed to confirm these associations.
