Utilization of Intermediate Steam From Thermal Power Plant Turbines in District Heating Systems and Power Plant Efficiency Analysis

Abstract

As the world's population increases, energy consumption is also rising day by day. To meet this energy demand, both renewable and non-renewable energy sources are used. Coal, a non-renewable energy source, is used to generate electricity in thermal power plants. The steam energy obtained from burning coal drives the generator. In this study, an efficiency analysis and necessary calculations were performed regarding the recovery of waste heat from the turbine outlet. In addition, the efficiencies of the combustion air and luvos were examined and analyzed. According to the values obtained from the calculation results, it was observed that leaks in the luvos were minimized. The feasibility of using the intermediate steam, which is used between turbine stages but still contains energy, for heating residential areas near the power plant was investigated. Measurements of the existing system were taken to obtain equipment efficiencies. Using these efficiencies, the amount of energy obtained from the intermediate steam was determined. In addition, the heating needs of the households in the residential area near the application site were calculated. As a result of these measurements and calculations, a feasibility study was conducted on using the energy obtained from the steam in a district heating system.
