UNLAWFUL ACTS THREATENING MARITIME SECURITY AND SUA CONVENTION
Abstract
Piracy is an unlawful act, which has been continuing its existence since the beginning of the maritime trade. At first, pirates captured ships’ crews by attacking merchant ships with their ships and looted goods. Later on, some pirates pledged allegiance to a state and they carried on their acts of piracy, protested and most importantly fought against enemy states in wars like a navy under the name of privateering with issued warrants by the state, pledged allegiance to. Acts of privateering are banned with the Paris Declaration of 1856. However, nowadays, acts of piracy and terrorism threaten/affect the security of not only trade, but also international maritime and hence international security. Achille Lauro hijacking brought up making an international agreement to prevent unlawful acts on the sea and the necessity for the cooperation of states to work, and the Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against the Safety of Maritime Navigation was signed. Acts of terrorism, dated on the September 11, 2001, led to the questioning of terrorism and international maritime security, besides acts of banditry, and made taken measures and international agreements/conventions within this scope essential to revise.
