Examination of the Relationship Between Verbal Working Memory and School Maturity of Children Aged 60-65 Months
Abstract
The aim of the study was to examine the connection between verbal working memory and school readiness in kindergarten children between the ages of 60 and 65 months. The population of the research consists of children aged between 60 and 65 months who are selected with the easy sampling method and shows the normal development and continue in private pre-school education institutions affiliated to the Ministry of National Education in Umraniye and Uskudar districts on Anatolian side of Istanbul in the 2021-2022 academic year. The data was gathered through a survey forms which are ‘‘Demographic Information Forms’’, ‘‘Working Memory Scale Verbal Memory Subscale’’ and ‘‘Marmara Elementary School Readiness Scale’’. All statistical analyses were conducted using the SPSS (25.00) program, and a significance level of 0.05 was used as the basis for interpreting the results. When the relationships between the total scores of mathematics skills, science skills, voice studies, line studies, labyrinths, mental-language development and verbal memory which are the research variables were examined, positive moderate and statistically significant relationships were found between verbal memory and mathematics skills, voice studies and line work variables. Similarly, positive low levels of statistically significant associations were found between verbal memory with labyrinth and mental-language development variables. Accordingly, as the total verbal memory scores of the participantsincreased; Math skillssound studies, line studies, labyrinth and mental language development scores also increase.
