Scientific Productivity and Research Trends in Digital Smile Design: A Bibliometric Evaluation

Abstract

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the bibliometric characteristics of scientific publications on digital smile design (DSD) and to identify global research trends, leading journals, authors, institutions, countries, and frequently used keywords. Materials and Methods: This descriptive bibliometric analysis was conducted using data retrieved from the Scopus database. The search was performed using the term “digital smile design” in the title, abstract, and keyword fields. Only original articles and review papers published between 2014 and 2025 were included, while editorials, conference abstracts, and other publication types were excluded. Bibliometric indicators, including publication year, journals, authors, institutions, countries, citation counts, and author keywords, were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Data visualization was performed using Microsoft Excel. Results: A total of 104 publications involving 453 authors were included, with a mean of 4.36 authors per article. Scientific productivity showed a marked increase after 2019, peaking in 2024 and 2025. The Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry and the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry were the most productive journals. Brazil, China, and the United States led in publication output, whereas Brazil, Italy, and the United States had the highest citation impact. The most frequently used keywords were “digital smile design,” “digital dentistry,” and “CAD/CAM.” Conclusion: The findings indicate a growing global interest in digital smile design and emphasize its integration with restorative and prosthetic dentistry. This study provides a comprehensive overview of current research trends and highlights potential directions for future research in digital dentistry.
