Bu çalışma, kent morfolojisi ve koruma alanları disiplinleri çerçevesinde, Kütahya'nın 20. yüzyılda geçirdiği mekânsal ve fiziksel dönüşümü incelemektedir. Araştırmanın temel amacı, kentin tarihsel sürekliliği içinde morfolojik yapıyı biçimlendiren dinamikleri belirlemek ve bu dinamiklerin kentsel kimlik üzerindeki etkilerini çok boyutlu olarak ortaya koymaktır. Bu bağlamda, demiryolunun gelişi, planlama kararları, sanayileşme süreci ve göç olgusu gibi faktörlerin kentsel form üzerindeki belirleyiciliği tartışılmıştır. Çalışmada nitel yöntem kullanılmış; tarihsel belgeler, hava fotoğrafları ve alan gözlemleri karşılaştırmalı olarak analiz edilmiştir. Elde edilen bulgular, Kütahya'nın mekânsal gelişiminin yalnızca planlı müdahalelerle değil, aynı zamanda toplumsal ve ekonomik süreçlerin etkisiyle şekillendiğini göstermektedir. Kentin geleneksel dokusu, 1960'lardan itibaren modern planlama yaklaşımlarının etkisiyle çözülmeye başlamış; organik sokak dokusu, doğal akarsu sistemi ve peyzaj alanları yerini düzenli parselasyonlu modern mahallelere bırakmıştır. Bu dönüşüm, kentin kimliğinde biçimsel ve işlevsel kırılmalar yaratmıştır. Çalışma, Kütahya'nın morfolojik değişimini tarihsel, mekânsal ve toplumsal boyutlarıyla bir arada ele alarak mevcut araştırmalara bütüncül bir değerlendirme çerçevesi kazandırmayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu yönüyle araştırma, Anadolu kentlerinin dönüşümünü yalnızca fiziksel değil, aynı zamanda sosyo-kültürel ve ekolojik dinamiklerle birlikte ele alan yaklaşımların geliştirilmesine katkı sağlamaktadır.
This study examines the spatial and physical transformation of Kütahya throughout the 20th century within the disciplinary framework of urban morphology and conservation studies. The main objective of the research is to identify the dynamics that have shaped the city's morphological structure within its historical continuity and to reveal their multidimensional impacts on urban identity. In this context, the study discusses the influence of factors such as the arrival of the railway, planning decision, industrialization processes and migration on the development of the urban form. A qualitative research method was adopted, and historical documents, aerial photographs and field observations were comparatively analyzed. The findings indicate that the spatial development of Kütahya was shaped not only by planned interventions but also by the interaction of social and economic processes. Since 1960s, the city's traditional urban fabric has gradually dissolved under the influence of modern planning approaches; the organic street pattern, natural waterways and landscape areas have been replaced by regularly parceled modern neighborhoods. This transformation has led to both morphological and functional ruptures in the city's identity. By addressing Kütahya's morphological transformation through its historical, spatial and social dimensions, the study aims to provide a comprehensive analytical framework that contributes to the understanding of urban change in Anatolian vities. In this regard, it supports the development of interdisciplinary approaches that interpret urban transformation not only through its physical aspects but also within its socio-cultural and eceological contexts.
