ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) and the Airline Industry: The Case of Korean Air

Öz

ESG encompasses environmental, social, and governance issues that enable companies to create long-term value, sustain their business strategies, and fulfill their responsibilities to the world and society. In recent years, ESG has become significant as non-financial matters, in addition to financial ones, influence investors' decisions. The measurement of ESG as a score is conducted by some third-party institutions. Nowadays, many companies publish ESG reports. However, only a few airlines publish ESG reports despite releasing sustainability reports annually. This study has discussed the concepts of ESG definition, ESG score, and the calculation of ESG score, then proceeded to elucidate ESG in the airline industry by examining Korean Air's 2022 ESG report.

ESG, şirketlerin uzun vadede değer yaratmaya, iş stratejilerini devam ettirebilmeye, dünyaya ve topluma karşı sorumluluklarını yerine getirmeye yarayan çevresel, sosyal, yönetişim konularını kapsar. Son yıllarda sadece finansal konulardan ziyade finansal olmayan konular da yatırımcıların yatırım alma kararlarını etkilediğinden ESG önemli hale gelmiştir. Bu kararları etkileyen ESG’nin bir skor olarak ölçülmesi bazı üçüncü taraf kurumlar tarafından yapılır. Günümüzde birçok şirket ESG raporlarını yayınlamaktadır. Havayolları ise her yıl sürdürülebilirlik raporlarını yayınlasalar da ESG raporunu yayınlayan az sayıda havayolu vardır. Bu çalışma ESG tanımı, ESG skoru, ESG skorunun hesaplanması kavramlarından bahsetmiş, daha sonra havayolu endüstrisinde ESG’yi açıklayarak Korean Air'ın 2022 ESG raporunu incelemiştir.
