Abstract
This study aimed to monitor the body measurements of ostrich chicks during their growth period and to estimate their live weight based on these measurements. The study was conducted on 7 ostrich chicks aged 35-60 days in Şanlıurfa province of Turkey. Morphometric measurements such as body length, body weight, chest circumference, tibia length, metatarsus length and height were taken at 20-day intervals over a 2-month period and the relationship between these measurements and live weight was statistically analyzed. While female chicks gained 21.50 kg of live weight in 60 days, male chicks gained 18.03 kg of live weight. In general, female and male chicks gained an average of 0.334 kg of live weight per day in 60 days. It was found that there was a high level of positive correlation (ranging from 0.911 to 0.974) between all body measurements (p<0.01). The study showed that body weight could be predicted from body measurements at levels ranging from 95% to 98% (p<0.01) with linear regression models. These findings contribute to the monitoring of growth and development processes in ostrich farming, providing an important guide to both increase production efficiency and optimize animal welfare.
