Political theology, though grounded in a long-standing tradition, is often regarded in contemporary debates as having been inaugurated by Walter Benjamin’s Critique of Violence (Zur Kritik der Gewalt, 1921) and Carl Schmitt’s Political Theology (Politische Theologie, 1922). In Benjamin’s thought, theology is employed to expose the violence and limits of sovereignty, whereas in Schmitt’s work, theology is used to legitimize and ground sovereignty. Johann Baptist Metz, who critically engages with Schmitt’s theories, constructs his own political theological framework around the concepts of universal solidarity, the authority of the suffering, and the struggle for liberation. Focusing on the relationship between theological and political concepts, political theology addresses the political consciousness within theology itself. A critical engagement with modernity may be considered the central point of convergence among all theories of political theology. Another focal point of this study, liberation theology, centers on social responsibility in societies living in poverty. In the 1960s, amid widespread poverty in Latin America, the role of theology was called into question. In 1968, the Medellin Conference formally placed the issue of poverty on the Church’s agenda. During this period, liberation theology, due to its alliance with Marxism, stood out from and was criticized compared to other responses regarding the role of theology. In liberation theology, the teachings of Christianity are largely combined with justice, transformation of social order, and political actions, are seen as necessary for each other. Similar themes are also found in the sources of political theology. The primary aim of this study is to identify the points at which political theology and liberation theology intersect and diverge. While some approaches view liberation theology as a sub-branch of political theology, there are also arguments that assert the two are fundamentally distinct. As a result, this study does not regard liberation theology as a mere extension of political theology. Nevertheless, it proposes that their shared concerns warrant deeper reflection and that these concerns should be integrated into the lived realities of theology, politics, and everyday life.
Politik teoloji, köklü bir geçmişe sahip olmakla birlikte, çağdaş tartışmalarda Walter Benjamin’in, Şiddetin Eleştirisi Üzerine (Zur Kritik der Gewalt, 1921) ve Carl Schmitt’in, Politik Teoloji (Politische Theologie, 1922) metinleri başlangıç kabul edilir. Benjamin, teolojiyi egemenliğin şiddetini ve sınırlarını açığa çıkarmak için kullanırken Schmitt, teoloji ile egemenliği temellendirir. Schmitt’in teorilerini eleştiren Johann Babtist Metz ise politik teoloji teorisini, evrensel dayanışma, acı çekenlerin otoritesi ve özgürleşme mücadelesi kavramlarıyla oluşturmuştur. Teolojik kavramlarla politik kavramlar arasındaki ilişkiye odaklanan politik teoloji, teolojinin kendisinin politik bilinci ile ilgilenmektedir. Bütün politik teoloji teorilerinin ortak noktasının modernite eleştirisi olduğu söylenebilir. Çalışmanın diğer odağı olan kurtuluş teolojisi ise yoksulluk içinde yaşayan toplumlarda sosyal sorumluluğu merkeze alan anlayıştır. 1960’larda Latin Amerika’daki sefalet ortamında teolojinin görevi sorgulanmıştır. 1968’de Medellin Konferansı ile yoksulluk problemi resmen Kilise’nin gündemine alınmıştır. Bu dönemde, teolojinin görevine dair pek çok yanıt içinde kurtuluş teolojisi Marksizm’le olan ittifakı nedeniyle diğerlerinden ayrılır ve eleştirilir. Kurtuluş teolojisinde, büyük oranda Hristiyanlık öğretileriyle birlikte adaletin, sosyal düzenin dönüştürülmesinin ve politik eylemlerin beraber ele alındığı, birbirlerinin gereği olduğu görülür. Politik teolojinin kaynaklarında da benzer temalara rastlanmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın asıl amacı iki alanın kesiştiği ve ayrıştığı noktaları ortaya koymaktır. Kurtuluş teolojisinin politik teolojinin bir alt kolu olduğuna dair yaklaşımın karşısında ikisinin kesinlikle birbirinden ayrı olduğunu ileri süren argüman vardır. Sonuç olarak kurtuluş teolojisi, politik teolojinin bir uzantısı değildir, yine de ortaklaştıkları kimi konularda derinlemesine düşünülmesi ve bunların yaşamın, teolojinin ve politikanın parçası haline getirilmesi fikri bu çalışmanın önerisidir.
