Aristoteles’in metafor tanımı yirminci yüzyıla kadar büyük oranda değişmeden kalmıştır. Benzetme ve benzerliğe dayanan bu tanım metaforu dilin süslü kullanımı gibi gören bir gelenek oluşturur. Ancak geçtiğimiz yüzyılda bu yaklaşım değişir ve çeşitli kuramlar ortaya çıkar. Bunlar metaforu bir dil görüngüsü olarak incelerler. Onun nasıl işlediğini göstermeye çalışırlar. Bununla beraber Aristoteles’in benzetme temelli tanımı etkisini kolaylıkla yitirmez. Yine de Black, Searle, Davidson gibi isimler benzetme temelli metafor düşüncesini eleştirir ve yeni kuramlar ortaya çıkar. Bu çalışmada metafor tartışmalarının dikkate alması gereken bazı ayrım noktalarını ve ilkeleri göstermek amaçlanmıştır. Bu kapsamda öncelikle tartışmanın temel sorunları ve farklı yaklaşımlar bulunmaktadır. Sonrasında metaforla ilişkili kavramların açıklaması yer alır. Çalışmanın iddiası bunlardan çıkacak sonuçların metafor incelemesini kolaylaştıracağı yönündedir. Ayrıca Türkçede metafor konusundaki bazı sorunlara yer verilir. Bunun da Türkçe metafor çalışmaları için faydalı olacağı savunulmuştur. Son olarak bu incelemelerden derlenen sonuçlarla yöntem açısından önemli noktalar bulunur. Buna göre metafora özel bir konum atfetmemek, incelemelerde bazı ayrımları dikkate almak ve benzerlikle değil, benzerlik atamakla açıklama yapmak metafor çalışmalarında olumlu sonuçları artırır.
Aristotle's account of metaphor remained largely unchanged until the twentieth century. This account, based on simile and similarity, established a tradition that viewed metaphor as a form of ornate language use. However, this approach shifted in the last century, and various theories emerged. These theories examine metaphor as a linguistic phenomenon. They attempt to show how it works. Nevertheless, Aristotle's comparison-based definition did not easily lose its influence. Still, figures such as Black, Searle, and Davidson criticized the simile-based account of metaphor, and new theories emerged. This study aims to highlight some key distinctions and principles that should be considered in discussions of metaphor. To this end, it first outlines the fundamental issues and various approaches to the debate. It then explains concepts related to metaphor. The conclusions drawn from this facilitate the study of metaphor. The study also touches upon some issues concerning metaphor in Turkish. This is considered useful for studies of metaphor in Turkish. Finally, the findings compiled from these studies highlight important methodological points. Accordingly, not attributing a special status to metaphor, taking certain distinctions into account in analyses, and explaining through the assignment of similarity rather than similarity itself enhance positive outcomes in metaphor studies.
