<p>Despite differing interpretations of the relationship between religion and science, it is evident that throughout the history of thought, the prevailing view has been that these two are in conflict or that religion hinders science. One of the most important reasons for this is that, until the first half of the 20th century, the dominant understanding of science was determined by Enlightenment and Positivist thinkers. These thinkers and their followers predominantly argued that religion, especially Christianity, conflicted with science and that religion was an obstacle to science. In contrast, from the beginning of the 20th century, some thinkers such as D. Stimson, R. Merton, and C. Webster, focusing on the historical, social, and cultural aspects of science, evaluated the relationship between science and religion from a different perspective. In short, these thinkers have argued that Protestantism, particularly sub-denominations such as Calvinism, Pietism, and Puritanism, had a significant influence on the formation of modern science. Although these views, known in the literature as the Mertonian thesis, have been subject to a certain degree of criticism, they still retain their importance and value today, particularly in Western literature. However, the same cannot be said for Turkey. One of the main reasons for this is that the importance of the sociology of science has not been fully grasped in Turkey, and consequently, no literature has been developed on the subject. In our study, we have attempted to address this deficiency in Turkey, contribute to the literature, and clearly and explicitly reveal the relationship between Protestantism and modern science. Ultimately, it has been observed that Protestantism, more specifically Calvinism and Puritanism, supported the development and institutionalisation of modern science, particularly in England around the 17th century, in the context of principles such as individual reading of the Holy Bible, studying nature as God&#039;s work, and achieving success in one&#039;s profession. However, it can be said that this support did not mean that the two were logically reconciled, but rather that it developed coincidentally during the process and was consolidated over time in the context of practical and pragmatic relationships.</p></trans-abstract>
