<p>OBJECTIVE: ERCP (Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreaticography) is a safe and effective treatment method, but it may sometimes cause some complications. Approximately 1-2% of these complications are defined as serious complications, and mortality rates of less than 1% have been reported. Our aim is to share our ERCP experience and complication management.MATERIAL AND METHODS: 722 patients who underwent ERCP for 3 years in the Health Sciences University Erzurum Regional Training and Research Hospital Endoscopy unit were evaluated retrospectively. Age, gender, laboratory and endoscopic findings of the ERCP cases were obtained from the hospital automation system. ERCP indication status and complications developing during and after the procedure were evaluated.RESULTS: Of the 722 patients who underwent ERCP, 450 (62.2%) were female and 272 (38.7%) were male. The mean age was 62.36 (18-110) years. Of the patients who underwent ERCP, 621 (86.0%) had choledocholithiasis, 44 (6.1%) had malignancy, 41 (5.6%) had benign stenosis of the biliary tract, 6 (0.8%) had other biliary tract tumors, 5 (0.7%) with bile duct injuries and postoperative bile leakage, 3 (0.4%) with fasciola hepatica and ascaris infestation, 2 (0.1%) with pancreatic duct stones anD pancreatic divisum. Complications developed in 69 patients after ERCP. Pancreatitis was most commonly seen in 51 (7.0%) patients. Other complications such as perforation and bleeding were below 1%.CONCLUSIONS: In order to minimize ERCP-related morbidity and mortality, the indication should be well determined before the procedure, early recognition and appropriate management of complications that may develop after the procedure is important. We believe that sharing these results is beneficial in terms of experience sharing.</p></trans-abstract>
