<p>OBJECTIVE: Among hemoglobinopathies, thalassemia and hemoglobin variants are inherited, autosomal recessive blood diseases that constitute an important public health problem in our country. Studies conducted to determine the frequency of these diseases are of great importance for the prevention and control of hemoglobinopathies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of thalassemia and hemoglobin variants in individuals who applied to the premarital screening program in Afyonkarahisar province.MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study, data from individuals persons who applied to Afyonkarahisar Public Health Laboratory for premarital screening between 01.01.2022 and 31.12.2023 with hemoglobin chain analysis test orders were retrospectively screened and the data of a total of 20849 persons were included in the study. All samples were analyzed by High- Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) on a Biorad Variant II Turbo device.RESULTS: In the study, 343 (1.6%) of 20849 individuals were beta thalassemia carriers with HbA2 levels of 3.5% and above. Of the carriers, 169 (49.3%) were female and 174 (50.7%) were male. HbS was the most common variant hemoglobin type and was detected in 31 (0.15%) individuals. HbD (0.11%) and HbE (0.02%) variants were detected in 22 and 5 individuals, respectively.CONCLUSIONS: The frequency rate of 1.6% for beta thalassemia carriage is lower than the 2.1% frequency rate of thalassemia carriage reported in Turkey. The second most common HbS variant with a frequency of 0.15% was also found to be lower than the frequency reported in Turkey.</p></trans-abstract>
