SOLID WASTE TO ENERGY: A TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC STUDY FOR INTEGRATED ENERGY PRODUCTION – THE CASE OF HAKKARI, TÜRKİYE

Abstract

This study evaluates waste management practices globally and in Türkiye, with a focus on energy recovery and production. The study includes calculations of solid waste production in Hakkari, the potential volume of landfill gas that can be produced at the facility, and the expected amount of gas that can be recovered for energy purposes. Hakkari's future population was estimated using the Provincial Bank method, and annual waste production was obtained based on daily averages per capita from this method. The LandGEM model was used to estimate landfill gas production. Subsequently, the potential electricity production that could be obtained from the internal combustion of the recovered gas was calculated. The analysis also presents the distribution of cost components for the energy production facility. According to LandGEM model estimates, landfill gas production is expected to increase from approximately 974527 m³/year in 2024 to 21360099 m³/year in 2050. This gas could support power generation capacity increasing from 0.16 MW in 2024 to 3.64 MW by 2050 using internal combustion engines. The findings demonstrate that the installation of such system is technically feasible and can play an important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and support Türkiye’s energy targets and waste management policies.
