Belief in the hereafter, which is one of the three essential constituents of the Islamic belief system, has been subject of different forms of perception, in a time when remnant ideas from the pre-Islamic era continue preserving their strength in territories that have newly become Muslim. In this context, in different periods, some have tried to incorporate the idea of reincarnation, which was known to exist before Islam, into the belief in the hereafter, by referring to the Qurʾān. However, this chain of thought was rejected on the grounds that it means the denial of the belief in the hereafter as established by the overall approach of the Qurʾān. Accordingly, the verses in question have been understood by the theology scholars in a different way, namely as verses not denoting reincarnation. Furthermore, it is defensible that the verses that reincarnationists have adduced as pieces of evidence of their thoughts and also some other verses from the Qurʾān, rebuttal the reincarnation. It is possible to see this when we look at the relevant verses and the interpretations of these verses suggested by the leading theorizers of the schools of Kalām.
İslam inanç sisteminin üç ana unsurundan biri olan ahiret inancı, yeni müslüman olan coğrafyalarda İslam öncesi bakiyelerin etklinliğini sürdürdüğü bir süreçte, farklı algılama biçimlerine konu olmuştur. Bu bağlamda İslam’dan önce varlığı bilinen tenâsüh düşüncesi de farklı dönemlerde, Kur’ân referans gösterilerek ahiret inancına dahil edilmeye çalışlmıştır. Ancak bu düşünce, Kur’ân’ın genel muhtevasıyla uyumlu olan ahiret inancının inkârı anlamına geldiği için kabul görmemiştir. Nitekim tenâsühçülerin kendi düşüncelerine Kur’ân’dan delil gösterdikleri ayetlerle birlikte başka ayetler de onları yalanlarken, söz konusu ayetler kelâm âlimleri tarafından tenâsühten farklı bir şekilde anlaşılmıştır. Bunu ilgili ayetlere ve bu ayetlerle ilgili kelam okullarının önde gelen teorisyenlerinin yorumlarına baktığımızda görmek mümkündür.
