Terapötik yardımcılar olarak evcil hayvanlar, bireylerarası yakınlığı kolaylaştırmakta, saldırganlık, ajitasyonu azaltmakta ve tedavi ortamlarını zenginleştirmektedir. Evcil hayvanların psikiyatrik, pediatrik ve geriatrik popülasyon üyelerinin yaşamlarını nasıl zenginleştirebileceğine yönelik çeşitli çalışmalar yapılmıştır. Araştırma sonuçları hayvan destekli terapiler ve hayvan destekli aktivitelerin sıklığı, süresi, kontrol edilebilirliği, örneklem büyüklükleri, oturum özellikleri, kullanılan evcil hayvan türleri ve metodolojik sınırlamalar nedeni ile bireylerin refahının hayvan destekli müdahalelerden nasıl etkilendiğine ilişkin net ve kesin sonuçların mevcut olmadığını ortaya koymaktadır. Ancak genel olarak evcil hayvan müdahalelerinin olumlu sosyal davranışları arttırdığı ve terapötik ortamda evcil hayvan kullanımının etkilerinin olumlu olduğunu göstermiştir.</p>

<p>Animal Assisted Interventions as part of therapy programs are gaining popularity. Pets facilitate interpersonal intimacy, reduce aggression and agitation, and enrich treatment environments when employed as therapeutic aids. Multiple studies have been conducted on how pets can enrich the lives of members of the psychiatric, pediatric and geriatric populations. The study results indicated that there are no clear and certain results on how Animal Assisted Interventions effect welfare of individuals due to frequency, duration, controllability, sample size and session characteristics of Animal Assisted Therapy and Animal Assisted Activities, and types of animals used as therapy pets and methodological limitations. However, the results showed that Animal Assisted Interventions generally reinforced positive social behaviors and the effects of utilization of pets in the therapeutic environment were overall positive.</p></trans-abstract>
