Cell phone-based mindfulness interventions for smoking cessation:Randominised control study

Yıl 2022, Cilt: 4 Sayı: 4, 370 - 377, 20.12.2022

Öz

Objective: In this study smoking cessation intervention with short text messages on the phone was examined. Unlike other studies, the awareness-based messages were sent to one group that would keep their motivation high for a happy life and to the other group awareness-based messages that drew attention to the harms of smoking.
Method: The study population consisted of smokers (n=286). The sample was composed of cases who applied to the outpatient clinic for different reasons, smoked for more than one year and had similar demographic data and smoking-related data. The motivations for quitting smoking were not looked at. Participants were randomly divided into 2 groups. Three motivational text messages were sent to Group 1 (n=146) every day which were not about smoking. Group 2 (n=140) received 3 messages per day about the harms of smoking. The effect of this method in smoking cessation intervention was evaluated .
Results: Smoking cessation rate was higher in Group 1 at first month (p= .001). However no significant difference was found in other months and in total (p> .05). Those experiencing withdrawal and hesitancy were found to be high in Group 2 (p= .002). Weight gain anxiety was higher in Group 1 (p= .003).
Conclusion: Telephone awareness messages enable people to make a decision to quit smoking. Thus it is possible to reach larger groups and get results similar to those in the polyclinic. The mindfulness-based messages generate faster decisions and fewer withdrawal complaints. In this way, people who are unwilling to quit smoking can be motivated.
