Comparison of ilioinguinal and anterior intrapelvic approaches in the treatment of acetabular fractures
Abstract
Aim: To compare the clinical, radiological and functional results of surgical treatment with the ilioinguinal and anterior intrapelvic (AIP) approach in patients with acetabular fractures.
Methods: A total of 34 patients who underwent surgical treatment for acetabular fractures between 2011 and 2016 with either the ilioinguinal or AIP were retrospectively reviewed. Demographic and clinical data were collected from patient records. Patients were divided into two groups according to the surgical approach, and their radiological (based on Matta’s criteria), and functional (based on the modified Merle d’Aubigné and Postel criteria) outcomes were evaluated.
Results: A total of 16 patients in the ilioinguinal group and 18 in the AIP group were evaluated. The mean age was higher in the AIP group. Although the AIP showed slightly better radiological and functional outcomes, no statistically significant difference was observed between the groups.
Conclusion: Both approaches yield comparable and satisfactory outcomes in the treatment of anterior acetabular fractures. These findings support the notion that the choice of approach should primarily depend on the surgeon’s experience and preference.
