Köroğlu, an epic hero type, is generally accepted as a mythical hero. However, the fact that the places and supporting elements in the narrative acquired qualities related to the real world has also given rise to claims regarding the historical reality of Köroğlu. In this study, while examining the course of changes in the structure and content of a folklore product in its transformation from myth to reality in the example of the Köroğlu narrative, it is also aimed to contribute to the scientific discussions on Köroğlu with the findings obtained. In order to see the working system of the narrative tradition in the transition from epic to folk tale and to make more objective evaluations of the historical and legendary personalities of the narrative heroes in the example of Köroğlu, it is necessary to look at the motifs and auxiliary elements in the narrative as structural elements that form the skeleton of the myth. Bringing to the forefront the common motifs and elements in the epic and folk tale genres and stripping them of the changes that the narrators make to ground these elements in reality (such as making “grave” into “blind” and “fog” into “pine”) will help us trace how the process of diversification and embodiment of folktales take place in the dynamic structure of folklore in the example of Köroğlu as in other similar narratives. Therefore, this study has two important outcomes. The first of these is to reveal how myth maintains its semantic integrity despite the changing nomenclatures along with the transformation of the genre; the second is to bring an approach to the analysis of historical and legendary persons and events in Köroğlu by developing the journey of a narrative formed in the mythical universe in the context of a new and more rational civilization. Considering the scope and limitations of this study, along with the diversity of Köroğlu narratives, it was found reasonable to conduct a discussion on the location, name and horse of the hero in order to achieve the purpose of the study. Considering the multitude of versions and branches of Köroğlu's narratives, it can be said that the mythical elements that Köroğlu has hidden in his genre transformation contain much more than what is given here. However, the possibility of the parts that this study could not address to be sources for other studies and the possibility of conducting more in-depth discussions in subsequent studies provided a separate opportunity for this study.
Bir destan tipi olan Köroğlu, genellikle mitik bir kahraman olarak kabul edilse de zamanla anlatıda geçen mekânların ve yardımcı unsurların gerçek dünyaya dair nitelikler edinmesi Köroğlu’nun tarihî gerçekliğine yönelik iddiaları da beraberinde getirmiştir. Bu çalışmada Köroğlu anlatısı örneğinde bir folklor mahsulünün mitten-gerçeğe dönüşümünde yapı ve muhtevasında olan değişikliklerin seyrine bakılırken Köroğlu’na yönelik bilimsel tartışmalara da elde edilen bulgularla katkı sunmak amaçlanmaktadır. Burada hem destandan hikâyeye geçişte anlatı geleneğinin çalışma sistemini görmek hem de Köroğlu örneğinde anlatı kahramanlarının tarihî ve efsanevi şahsiyetlerine yönelik daha nesnel değerlendirmeler yapabilmek için anlatıda yer alan motif ve yardımcı unsurlara mitin iskeletini oluşturun yapı unsurları olarak bakmak gerekmektedir. Bu bakış açısı ile destan ve hikâye türündeki ortak motif ve unsurları ön plana çıkarmak ve anlatıcıların bu unsurları gerçekliğe yaklaştırmak üzere uğrattığı değişikliklerden ayırmak (“gor”u “kör”, “çen”i “çam” yapmak gibi) Köroğlu örneğinde benzer başka anlatılarda da çeşitlenme ve şekillenme sürecinin folklorun dinamik yapısında nasıl gerçekleştiğinin izlenmesine yardımcı olacaktır. Dolayısıyla bu çalışma iki önemli çıktıya sahiptir. Bunlardan birincisi türün dönüşümüyle birlikte değişen adlandırmalara rağmen mitin semantik bütünlüğünü nasıl koruduğunu açığa çıkarmak; ikincisi ise mitik evrende teşekkül eden bir anlatının yeni ve daha rasyonel olan medeniyet bağlamındaki yolculuğunu görerek Köroğlu örneğinde tarihî ve efsanevi kişi ve olayların çözümlemesine bir yaklaşım getirmektir. Bu çalışmanın kapsamı ve sınırlılığı, Köroğlu anlatılarının çeşitliliğiyle birlikte gözetildiğinde çalışmanın amacına ulaşılabilmesinde özellikle kahramanın mekânı, adı ve atı üzerinde bir tartışma yürütülmesi makul bulunmuştur. Fakat bu çalışmanın ele alamadığı kısımların da başka çalışmalara kaynaklık etme ihtimali ve sonraki çalışmalarda daha derin tartışmaları gerçekleştirme imkânlarının bulunması bu çalışmanın yürütülmesine ayrı bir fırsat sağlamıştır.
