<p>Although cannibalism is a biological and ecological strategy observed in many species in nature, it is rare among mammals and represented by only a few examples among primates. Therefore, cases of cannibalism in Homo sapiens should be considered within a unique and multifaceted context. This study explores cannibalism from both biological and cultural perspectives, drawing comparisons with its manifestations in nature to highlight similarities and distinctions. Throughout human history, cannibalism has emerged in various forms for reasons such as famine, ritual practices, warfare strategies, and psychopathological conditions. In this context, the study examines the transformation and frequency of cannibalism chronologically and analyzes the conditions under which it emerged in different societies. This analysis, developed in light of ethnographic observations, archaeological evidence, and historical records, contributes to our understanding of how biological predispositions underlying human behavior are shaped by cultural and environmental dynamics. Archaeological indicators, such as cut marks on human bones and the context in which remains were found, offer critical insights into past cannibalistic practices. Cannibalism should not only be seen as a consequence of extreme conditions but also as a component of social organization, dietary patterns, symbolic thought, and adaptive strategies during periods of crisis. The results of the study show that the reasons for the emergence of cannibalism in human societies should be considered in a multidimensional framework. Another important aspect of this study is to draw attention to the importance of cannibalism in anthropological, archaeological, forensic and psychiatric aspects.</p></trans-abstract>
