<p>To examine the perceptions of women of reproductive age towards menstruation through metaphors. Phenomenological design, one of the qualitative research designs, was used in the study. The universe of the study consisted of women who could be reached online, and the sample included 92 women who met the participation criteria. Data were collected through a form that included socio-demographic characteristics and questions in the format of “… is like, because…”. Metaphor analysis was performed with a five-stage content analysis. Women created 92 metaphors for menstruation. Most of the women likened menstruation to the concept of “torture/pain” and described menstrual blood as “purification/cleansing”. Women identified menstruating women with “spring/blooming.” Women described not menstruating as “lack/emptiness.” Women have both positive and negative perceptions about the menstruation process. Negative perceptions about menstruation should be changed through education programs and awareness campaigns.</p></trans-abstract>
