Use of Simulation in the Field of Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing in Turkey: Systematic Review of Postgraduate Theses

Abstract

This study was conducted to examine postgraduate theses on the use of simulation in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing in Turkey. The universe of the study consisted of studies scanned in the "Council of Higher Education National Thesis Center" database between May and June 2025 using the keywords "simulation", "simulator", "standard patient", "scenario", "virtual reality", and "nurse". Regardless of the date range in the scan, 16 postgraduate theses evaluating the use of simulation in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing were included in the scope of the research. The total sample size of the theses included in the study consisted of 1256 participants. It was seen that the first thesis was published in 2015, and the highest numbers were reached in 2018 and 2024. It was determined that 56.25% of the theses were at the doctoral level, 56.25% had an experimental design, and 68.75% were conducted with nursing students. It has been determined that the simulation method improves students' psychomotor, cognitive, communication, and counseling skills, is highly effective in teamwork, and increases satisfaction with learning, self-confidence in learning, and clinical decision-making levels. It has been determined that simulation-based education increases the knowledge and self-efficacy of midwives and nurses, positively affects mothers' breastfeeding attitudes, and increases breastfeeding duration, success, and knowledge. It has been determined that the use of the simulation method in the education of students, midwives/nurses, and women is an effective method in gaining knowledge, skills, positive attitudes, and behaviors. It is recommended that the use of simulation methods be expanded in education given for birth and women's health, and that more experimental thesis studies be conducted in this field.
