Objective: In this study, the efficacy and tolerability of sildenafil were evaluated using the self-administered International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) questionnaire inpatients with erectile dysfunction (ED). Methods: Fifty-six patients suffering from ED at least one year duration were enrolled in the study. Allpatients underwent a complete urological, ophtalmological and cardiac work-up, intracavernous injection of papaverine and penile Doppler ultrasound examination. Patients were instructed to take 50 mg sildenafil as needed but not more than one dose daily. After 8 weeks of treatment, patients were revisited and the efficacy of sildenafil was assessed according to the changes of IIEF. Results: Forty-one (73%) patients completed the study the reasons for incompletion were adverse effect in 3 (5.3%) patients, insufficient clinicalresponse in4 (7.1%) andlost of follow-up in 8 (14.2%). A total of 29 out of 41 (70.3%) patients reported improved erections sufficient for vaginal penetration according to the responses to questions 3 and 4 of the IIEF (p<0.01). Treatment with sildenafil was generally well tolerated. The side effects wereheadacheandmildflushinginatotalof7(17%)patients.Theoverallpatient satisfactionratewas61%. Conclusions: Although the present study was not specifically designed to evaluate different subgroups of patients with ED, sildenafil was generally found to be a safe and effective treatment option in men with ED of various etiologies.
