Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine clinical and demographic characteristics of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) and visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in the province ofAydın 2001. Methods: The records of patients diagnosed with VL and CL were obtained from the Bureau of Ministry of Health inAydın andAdnan Menderes University Hospital, and were evaluated retrospectively. Results: Forty-five patients werefoundtohaveCL, whoseagesrangedfrom 1 to 81 and 4 patients had VLwhose ages ranged from 1 to 6years. Geographic distribution of the cases was as follows: 3 (6.7%) patients withCLwere from the city center, 42 (93.3%) were from small towns and villages. However, all of the VL cases were from towns and villages. 21 (46,7%) cases had one lesion, 11 (24,4%) cases had two lesions and 13 (28,9%) cases had three or more lesions. Twenty-four cases (53.3%) had lesions localized to face only, while the remaining, cases had whidespread lesions distributedthroughout the arms, legs and face. Conclusion: Both VL and CL cases are seen inAydın. Inorderto prevent leishmaniasis as a health problem, it is important to make more investigations about parasites, vectors andreservoirs.
