There is an overlap between existentialist philosophy, which explores the individual's search for meaning in an indifferent universe, and the novel genre. The novel, which parallels the development of modernism, primarily focuses on problematic individuals, leading to plots that question the very concept of life. Because of this potential offered by the novel, existentialist thinkers sought to express their own philosophical thoughts through this genre. The increasing preference for the inner world of the individual, which has become problematic in modern times, has made the novel a focus of self-centered narratives and currents of thought. Consequently, the number of novels addressing concerns such as death, meaninglessness, alienation, and freedom has increased. Murat Gülsoy's novel "Ve Ateş Bizi Tüketiyor" is one such work where these concerns become a theme. In this work, which explores existential anxieties through the characters of the novel, the author's perspective is directed towards the characters' inner worlds. Because the theme concerns everyone, the characters are not named. The search, which begins with a judge (chief criminal) leaving his home, evolves into an existential inquiry that continues throughout the night. The fact that the search continues at night is related to the pessimistic nature of ontological anxieties. During the search, the self-narrator, holding the abandoned man's old ID card, speaks to many people in various locations. At the end of the search, the self-narrator detects the close connection between the person he seeks and his own self. In other words, what the novel's character seeks is not someone else, but the self itself. Therefore, the novel's central theme is the struggle to reclaim the lost self.
Bireyin kayıtsız bir evrendeki anlam arayışını irdeleyen Varoluşçu felsefeyle roman türü arasında bir örtüşme vardır. Modernizmin gelişimiyle paralel yürüyen romanın temelde problematik kişileri konu edinmesi, yaşam anlayışının sorgulandığı olay örgülerini gündeme getirir. Romanın sahip olduğu bu imkândan dolayı varoluşçu düşünürler, kendi felsefi düşüncelerini bu tür vasıtasıyla dile getirmeye çalışmışlardır. Modern zamanda sorunsallaşan bireyin iç dünyasının daha çok tercih edilmesi, romanı “ben” merkezli anlatımların ve düşünce akımlarının odağı yapmıştır. Bundan dolayı ölüm, anlamsızlık, yabancılaşma ve özgürlük gibi kaygıların işlendiği romanların sayıları artmıştır. Murat Gülsoy’un Ve Ateş Bizi Tüketiyor adlı romanı, bu kaygıların izleğe dönüştüğü eserlerden biridir. Dolayısıyla romanın temel izleği, yitirilen benliğe kavuşma çabasıdır.
