<p>The lack of grammatical gender markers in Turkish causes equivalence problems in translations into English. This study examines the methods that can be applied when the equivalence of the third-person singular noun &quot;o&quot; (he/she/it) cannot be achieved in translations from Turkish to English and also aims to explain the gender associations of profession names in the Turkish context. Five sentences containing the words doctor, teacher, engineer, lawyer, and secretary were translated using machine translation tools, and a questionnaire was administered to students in the preparatory, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades of the English Translation and Interpreting departments. The use of third-person singular nouns was analyzed. In addition, data for each profession were retrieved from the Turkish National Corpus, and the results were compared with other translation data. Semantic and structural translation problems were observed when equivalence could not be achieved in the third-person singular, and the methods used by some students were identified. Gender connotations of professions were analyzed through corpus data. It was found that the associations identified in the corpus data had similar patterns in both translations.</p></trans-abstract>

Çalışma, Türkçeden İngilizceye yapılan çevirilerde üçüncü tekil kişi adılı olan “o” (he/she/it) eşdeğerliliğinin sağlanamadığı durumlarda uygulanabilecek yöntemleri incelemektedir ve aynı zamanda, Türkçe bağlamında meslek adlarına dair cinsiyet çağrışımlarının açıklanması amaçlanmıştır.
