Throughout history, the concept of Axis Mundi has occupied a central place in urban formations across different cultures. As a symbolic focus, it has been defined as the centre of religious and political power in cities. In traditional cities, sacred sites, some monumental buildings, and even urban boundaries were associated with this concept. With modernity, the traces of Axis Mundi in the city have continued to transform. Some financial and business centres, shopping malls in every city or various public spaces such as squares are extensions of Axis Mundi. This study examines the transformation of the Axis Mundi concept from traditional to modern forms in an urban context, drawing on both theoretical and spatial references. In this context, the determinacy of Axis Mundi in traditional urban space is examined first. In the second part, the impact of social and political dynamics that have transformed with modernity on the urban visibility of the Axis Mundi is investigated. Ultimately, the study reveals that there is a quest for a center in all urban formations and that the Axis Mundi is symbolized in various ways for this purpose.
Axis Mundi tarih boyunca farklı kültürlerde kentsel biçimlenişin temelinde yer almıştır. Kentlerde sembolik bir odak olarak dini, politik ve ekonomik güç merkezi Axis Mundi ile tanımlanmıştır. Geleneksel kentlerde kutsal mekanlar, bazı anıtsal yapılar ve hatta kentsel sınırlar bu kavramla ilişkilendirilmiştir. Moderniteyle birlikte Axis Mundi’nin kent içerisinde izleri dönüşerek devam etmiştir. Bazı finans ve iş merkezleri, her kentte yer alan alışveriş merkezleri ya da meydanlar gibi çeşitli kamusal alanlar Axis Mundi’nin birer uzantısıdır. Bu çalışmada Axis Mundi kavramının kentsel bağlamda gelenekselden moderniteye dönüşümünü teorik ve mekânsal örneklerle irdelenmektedir. Bu bağlamda öncelikle Axis Mundi’nin geleneksel kent mekânındaki belirleyiciliği incelenmektedir. İkinci kısımda ise moderniteyle değişen sosyal ve siyasi dinamiklerin Axis Mundi’nin kentsel görünürlüğü üzerindeki etkisi ele alınmıştır. Sonuçta çalışmada tüm kentsel oluşumlarda bir merkez arayışının olduğu ve Axis Mundi’nin bu amaçla farklı şekillerde sembolize edildiği ortaya konulmaktadır.
