Evolutionary biology is a hermeneutic branch of science that constructs narratives about the history of life. Phenomena that happen once and cannot be repeated constitute the main subjects of this discipline. Hereof, it is closer to the humanities, which use hermeneutic methods rather than the natural sciences, which emphasise experimental methods. The hermeneutic nature of evolutionary biology allows us to evaluate the subjects it examines as if they were a text. Understanding a text requires approaching it with some prejudices/pre-understandings. Therefore, it is inevitable for evolutionary biology to construct some preliminary designs and construct narratives based on these when approaching facts. All these processes reveal the hermeneutic character of evolutionary biology. However, these qualities do not show that this branch of science does not resort to experimental methods when reaching certain conclusions and that the results it reaches are far from the characteristics of objectivity and universality. This article evaluates the mentioned qualities of evolutionary biology and reaches some conclusions. The number of studies on the basic problems addressed in this article is quite insufficient. For this reason, our study is a sketch prepared with the aim of creating a general framework based on a very wide literature review.
Evrimsel biyoloji canlılığın tarihiyle ilgili anlatılar oluşturan hermeneutik karakterde bir bilim dalıdır. Bir kerede olup biten, tekrarlanamaz nitelikte olgular bu disiplinin ana konularını oluşturur. Bu yönüyle deneysel yöntemleri öne çıkaran doğa bilimlerinden çok hermeneutik nitelikte yöntemler kullanan beşerî bilimlere daha yakındır. Evrimsel biyolojinin hermeneutik doğası incelediği konuları bir metin gibi değerlendirmemize imkân verir. Bir metni anlamak, ona bazı ön yargılarla/ön anlamalarla yaklaşmayı gerektirir. Dolayısıyla evrimsel biyolojinin olgulara yaklaşırken birtakım ön tasarımlar kurgulaması ve bunlardan hareketle anlatılar inşa etmesi kaçınılmazdır. Tüm bu süreçler evrimsel biyolojinin hermeneutik karakterini ifşa eder. Fakat söz konusu nitelikler bu bilim dalının birtakım sonuçlara ulaşırken deneysel yöntemlere hiç başvurmadığı ve ulaştığı sonuçların nesnellik ve evrensellik özelliklerinden uzak olduğunu göstermez. Bu makale evrimsel biyolojinin sözü edilen nitelikleri üzerine değerlendirmelerde bulunmakta ve bazı sonuçlara ulaşmaktadır. Makalede ele alınan temel problemlerin hakkında yapılan çalışma sayısı oldukça yetersizdir. Bu nedenle bizim çalışmamız, çok geniş bir literatür taramasından hareketle genel bir çerçeve oluşturma hedefiyle hazırlanmış bir taslak niteliğindedir.
