The Return of The Repressed: Environmental Crises, Social Inequalities, and Migration in The Anthropocene Era

This study examines the impact of the Anthropocene era on human mobility from a multilayered perspective, analyzing the role of climate change, ecological degradation, and environmental crises in migration dynamics within the context of social inequalities and environmental justice. While the Anthropocene deepens global crises—increasing displacement, ecological destruction, and social injustices—it drives vulnerable communities into precarious migration processes. The study argues that migration is not merely a reaction to environmental changes but also a manifestation of historical and systemic injustices. In this context, the concept of “the return of the repressed” is employed to analyze the enduring effects of colonialism, economic structures, and social dynamics on contemporary migration movements. Adopting a critical perspective, the article examines migration policies, highlighting contradictions in border control, environmental justice, and climate adaptation strategies. It argues that migration and ecological justice must be reconsidered in an era where environmental crises and social inequalities are deeply intertwined.
