The Political Ecology of Energy Transition: Energy Justice in The Anthropocene

This study examines the structural relationship between climate change and the energy sector from a political ecology perspective. It opens a space for discussions on energy justice within the conceptual framework of the Anthropocene. It questions how global energy transition policies should be shaped in line with principles of justice, drawing on critiques that the Anthropocene narrative obscures historical and geographical inequalities by attributing responsibility for the climate crisis to a homogenous "humanity." The study introduces the conceptual framework of energy justice by elaborating on its key dimensions: distributive, procedural, recognition, restorative, and cosmopolitan justice. Emphasizing the urgent need to transform the fossil-based energy system—rooted in historical inequalities—as a response to the climate crisis, the article argues that without the critical and social science-oriented insights provided by the energy justice framework, the process of energy transition runs the risk of deepening existing inequalities and generating new forms of injustice.
