Objective: This study aimed to systematically and quantitatively examine the anatomical terms in Terminologia Anatomica (2nd edition, 2019) in terms of Latin adjectives indicating direction and position, and to determine their diversity, frequency of use, and distribution across anatomical systems.Materials and Methods: This descriptive terminology study was based on document analysis of Terminologia Anatomica (FIPAT, 2nd ed., 2019). Anatomical terms were screened for Latin adjectives denoting direction and position. Identified adjectives were classified according to type, frequency, antonym pairs, anatomical system distribution, and number of adjectives per term. Data were evaluated using counts and percentages.Results: A total of 18 different Latin adjectives indicating direction and position were identified. Among approximately 1700+ anatomical terms examined, 612 terms contained at least one directional/positional adjective (approximately 35-40%). The most frequent adjectives were posterior (n=45), inferior (n=43), anterior (n=37), lateralis (n=32), and superior (n=32). The three core antonym axes (anterior-posterior, superior-inferior, medialis-lateralis) accounted for a substantial proportion of usage. The highest density across systems was observed in osteologia (n=176; 28.8%) and myologia (n=168; 27.5%). Single-adjective terms constituted 68.8%, two-adjective terms 26.3%, and terms with three or more adjectives 4.9%.Conclusion: Directional and positional adjectives in Terminologia Anatomica are not merely grammatical modifiers but core functional components forming the standardized and discriminative backbone of anatomical description. These findings may contribute to structured anatomy terminology teaching and a better understanding of terminological standardization.
Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, Terminologia Anatomica’nın (2. baskı, 2019) anatomik terimlerini yön ve konum bildiren Latin sıfatlar açısından sistematik ve kantitatif olarak incelemek, söz konusu sıfatların çeşitliliğini, kullanım sıklıklarını ve anatomik sistemlere göre dağılımını ortaya koymaktır.Gereç ve Yöntemler: Çalışma, Terminologia Anatomica (FIPAT, 2. baskı, 2019) üzerinde yürütülen doküman incelemesine dayalı tanımlayıcı bir terminoloji araştırmasıdır. Anatomik terimler yön ve konum bildiren Latin sıfatlar açısından taranmış, saptanan sıfatlar tür, frekans, karşıt sıfat çiftleri, anatomik sistem dağılımı ve terim başına sıfat sayısı bakımından sınıflandırılmıştır. Elde edilen veriler sayı ve yüzde olarak değerlendirilmiştir.Bulgular: İnceleme sonucunda yön ve konum bildiren toplam 18 farklı Latin sıfat tespit edilmiştir. İncelenen anatomik terimlerin yaklaşık 1700+ olduğu, bunların 612’sinde en az bir yön/konum bildiren sıfat bulunduğu belirlenmiştir (yaklaşık %35-40). En sık kullanılan sıfatlar posterior (n=45), inferior (n=43), anterior (n=37), lateralis (n=32) ve superior (n=32) olarak saptanmıştır. Çekirdek üç karşıt eksen (anterior-posterior, superior-inferior, medialis-lateralis) toplam kullanımın önemli bölümünü oluşturmuştur. Sistem dağılımında en yüksek yoğunluk osteologia (n=176; %28,8) ve myologia (n=168; %27,5) bölümlerinde görülmüştür. Terimlerin %68,8’inde tek sıfat, %26,3’ünde iki sıfat, %4,9’unda ise üç ve daha fazla sıfat yer almaktadır.Sonuç: Yön ve konum bildiren sıfatlar, Terminologia Anatomica içinde yalnızca dilbilgisel niteleyiciler değil, anatomik tanımlamanın standart, ayırt edici ve işlevsel omurgasını oluşturan temel terminolojik bileşenlerdir. Bu bulguların anatomi terminolojisi öğretiminin yapılandırılmasına ve terminolojik standardizasyonun daha iyi anlaşılmasına katkı sağlayacağı düşünülmektedir.
