Symbolic Meanings of Blue Color in Ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt

Abstract

Color is one of the important concepts that humanity has matched with situations since the moment it tried to make sense of the events around it and itself. It is clear that people did not know much about color in the past. For ancient people, colors were only associated with certain situations, events and emotions, thus they gained symbolic meanings. These symbols have been shaped according to the cultural values, geography, social environment and belief systems of the societies. Blue was symbolized by the concepts of divine grace and forgiveness in Ancient Mesopotamia. Likewise, in Egypt, the color blue ascribed holiness. The fascination of the blue-dark blue color made lapislazuli very popular in Egyptian and Mesopotamian civilizations. In the literature, there are various studies on the trade of lapislazuli, the meanings of colors, and Mesopotamian and Egyptian civilizations. However, there is no study that deals with the symbolic meaning of the use of blue color through the civilizations and combined with lapislazuli stone. The aim of this study is to reveal a collective publication on the subject and to determine and describe the symbolic meaning and usage area of the color blue. In this direction, first of all, the history of color culture, the concept of color and the process of color gaining a symbolic function were examined. The use of blue color and the use of lapislazuli stone, trade and symbolic meanings have been determined in both ancient Mesopotamian and Ancient Egyptian civilizations.
