Glass Findings from Knidos Harbor Street Complex

Abstract

Located on the mainland part of Knidos, the "Harbor Street Complex" was likely reorganized during the mid to late 4th century BC. Excavations between 2016 and 2019 uncovered seven adjacent spaces along the east side of Harbor Street, which runs in a north-south direction. Archaeological evidence indicates that the complex was in use from the 4th century BC until the mid-7th century AD. This study focuses on the evaluation of glass finds unearthed from this context. The glass artifacts from the Harbor Street Complex include bowls, plates, goblets, glasses, beakers, bottles, jugs, and oil lamps. Among these are bowls and plates with hollow folded rims, tube-shaped rims, out-turned rims, and glass band rims, as well as conical and funnel-shaped bottles, bell-conical and U-shaped glasses—features characteristic of the 4th-6th centuries AD. Also found were massive oil lamp bases and handles, continuing the glass traditions of the Late Roman period. The glass vessels from the Knidos Harbor Street Complex are representative of well-known forms from the Eastern Mediterranean, including examples from Syria-Palestine and Cyprus. These vessels closely resemble those typical of Karia and Lycia during the 4th-6th centuries AD, although fewer comparable examples have been found in Ionian cities. The glass finds have been dated to the 4th-7th centuries AD, based on an evaluation of the architecture of the spaces, alongside ceramics, coins, and other artifacts, within the context of the Late Antique period.
