SUMMARY
The relationship of arterial and cerobro-spinal fluid pH in metabolic aci¬dosis and its response to NaHCO3 therapy
Blood and CSF pH ieveis are measured in 16 patients with metabolic acidosis, and 8 patients with normal acid-base balance. In normal patients CSF pH was 7.39 + 0.05, arterial pH was 7.40 ""+0.03. In metabolic acidosis these measurements were 7.32 + 0.11 and 7.22"+" 0.10 respectively. Arterial pH rose as CSF pH fell 2 and 4 hours after NaHCOa infusion and CSF pH started to rise again after 4 hours reaching a stable level in 6 hours. These results indicate that in.metabolic acidosis CSF pH is kept normal or near normal levels while arterial pH is low and NaHCOa therapy causes a depression in the CSF pH while arterial pH increases.
