Gastrointestinal Complications of Nonsteroidal Antiinflammatory Drugs
%/ Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAİD) are popular by virtue of their analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and platelet inhibitoiy actions. These drugs inhibit the intracellular cyclooxygenase enzyme system, thus blocking the production of various prostaglandin compounds. The most common side effect of NSAİD therapy relates to gast¬rointestinal damage. A wide variety of disorders may develop in patients taking NSAlDs, ranging from minor dyspepsia to life-threatening ulcer bleeding or perforation. Treatment involves stopping the drug if at all possible and then instituting more specific therapy de¬pending on the anatomic area that has been injured.
