Professor Haldun Akoglu is a highly respected academic, researcher, and educator in emergency medicine, with a strong focus on research, faculty development, and digital education. He has authored over 150 publications, accumulating more than 8,000 citations, and has served as Editor-in-Chief for multiple international and regional emergency medicine journals. His expertise spans trauma care, clinical decision support tools, and medical education, with a particular emphasis on research methodology, statistics, epidemiology, medical writing, meta-analysis, systematic literature review, and critical appraisal—subjects he has been teaching to young academicians for over a decade.
A pioneer in digitalizing emergency medicine education, Professor Akoglu founded Acilci.Net, Turkey’s most prominent Free Open Access Medical Education (FOAMed) platform, as well as Akamedika, an innovative company specializing in remote medical education technology. His contributions to emergency medicine education and research extend internationally, representing Turkey on the Education and Research Committees of the International Federation for Emergency Medicine (IFEM) and the European Society for Emergency Medicine (EuSEM). He also serves as the president of the Trauma Section of the Emergency Medicine Association of Turkey (EMAT).
Professor Akoglu has been actively involved with IFEM for the past three years, contributing to the Research and Core Curriculum and Education Committees. He played a key role in developing the research pre-course in a blended format, co-authored the ED overcrowding white paper, and contributed to the development of Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs). He is also a dedicated member of the ICEM abstract committees, supporting high-quality emergency medicine research and fostering global collaboration.
Currently, Professor Akoglu is focused on enhancing faculty development in research, expanding international research collaborations, and supporting the establishment of an IFEM journal to provide a global platform for impactful emergency medicine research. His commitment to advancing emergency medicine education and scholarship continues to drive his contributions at both national and international levels.
Associate Professor and Emergency Medicine Specialist, Dr. Alp Şener, was born in Trabzon on October 14, 1977. After completing his primary and secondary education in Trabzon, he enrolled in Ankara University Faculty of Medicine and graduated in June 2004. Subsequently, he was admitted to the Department of Emergency Medicine at Gazi University Faculty of Medicine and graduated as an emergency medicine specialist in January 2010.
In his professional career, he worked at various hospitals in Ankara, including Ankara Atatürk Training and Research Hospital Emergency Medicine Clinic, Gülhane Military Medical Academy Emergency Medicine Clinic, Ankara Medicana Hospital, and several temporary assignments. In 2019, he was appointed as a Faculty Member at the Emergency Medicine Clinic of Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University Faculty of Medicine. As of February 2019, with the establishment of Ankara Bilkent City Hospital, he continued his work there. On September 22, 2022, Dr. Alp Şener had the title of Associate Professor and continues his academic career as an Associate Professor at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University Faculty of Medicine and Ankara Bilkent City Hospital. His academic interests include resuscitation, pain management, local and regional anesthesia, research methodology, and biostatistics. Dr. Alp Şener is a member of the Turkish Emergency Medicine Association.
He is married, has two sons, and is a passionate Trabzonspor fan. His hobbies include volleyball, folk dancing, Latin dances, and windsurfing.
