BİZANS SANATINDA “KUTSAL RUH”: İNANÇ, SEMBOLİZM VE İKONOGRAFİ

Öz

Bizans döneminde Kutsal Ruh, hem teolojik düşüncenin merkezinde yer alan bir inanç konusu hem de dönem tasvir sanatında kullanılan güçlü bir semboldür. Hristiyan inanışında Kutsal Ruh (Pneuma Hagion) Baba ve Oğul’dan ayrılmayan ilahi bir varlık olarak Kutsal Üçleme’nin (Trinity) bir parçası olarak kabul edilir. Üçlemenin son kısmını oluşturan Kutsal Ruh ilahi bir güç olarak Tanrı’nın yeryüzünde ilişki kurmasına aracılık eden bir varlıktır. Ancak aynı zamanda Bizans sanatında görülen Kutsal Ruh temsilleri Tanrı’nın görünmezliği ilkesi gereğince sembolik olarak karşımıza çıkar. En yaygın Kutsal Ruh sembolü güvercin olup, Meryem’e Müjde, Vaftiz, Meryem ve Çocuk İsa ve Hetoimasia (Boş Taht) sahnelerinde karşımıza çıkar. En nadir görülen Kutsal Ruh sembolü buluttur. Teolojide Başkalaşım anlatısında Kutsal Ruh’un parlak bir bulut olarak tasvir edilmiş olsa da ikonografide bulut yerine mandorla kullanımı yaygındır. Ateşten diller formunda betimlenen Kutsal Ruh sembolleri ise ağırlıklı olarak Pentekost sahnelerinde görülmekle beraber Meryem tasvirli bazı mühürlerde de karşımıza çıkar. İncelenen örnekler ışığında en yoğun sembolün güvercin; en yaygın sahnenin ise Vaftiz olduğu görülmüştür. Bu çalışmada, Bizans’ta Kutsal Ruh’un teolojik temelleri ve sanat eserlerindeki ikonografik temsilleri ele alınmış; inanç, sembolizm ve görsel ifade arasındaki ilişki sorgulanmıştır

THE HOLY SPIRIT IN BYZANTINE ART: THEOLOGY, SYMBOLISM AND ICONOGRAPHY

Öz

In Byzantine art, the Holy Spirit occupies a central place both theologically and symbolically. The Holy Spirit (Pneuma Hagion) is regarded as a divine being inseparable from the Father and the Son, forming part of the Holy Trinity. As the final person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit functions as a divine force mediating God's interaction with the earthly realm. In Byzantine art, however, representations of the Holy Spirit appear in symbolic form, in accordance with the principle of the divine invisibility of God.The most common symbol of the Holy Spirit is the dove, which appears in scenes such as the Annunciation, the Baptism, The Virgin and Child, and the Hetoimasia (Empty Throne). The cloud is the rarest symbol used to signify the Holy Spirit. Although in theology, particularly in the narrative of the Transfiguration, the Holy Spirit is described as a radiant cloud, Byzantine iconography more commonly employs the mandorla in its place. Depictions of the Holy Spirit in the form of tongues of fire are primarily found in Pentecost scenes, but they also appear on seals featuring the Virgin. Examining the examples, it can be seen that the most common symbol is the dove, and the most common scene is baptism. In this study, the theological foundations of the Holy Spirit in Byzantium and its iconographic representations in works of art are discussed; the relationship between faith, symbolism and visual expression is questioned.
