THE IMPACT OF BILATERAL READABILITY ON VISUAL COMMUNICATION*

Öz

The intersection of linguistics and typographic design provides a distinct viewpoint on visual
communication design. This research seeks to investigate how these typographic expressions,
such as variations in reading direction, affect the borders of visual communication.
The importance of this kind of typographic expression is to attract the audience’s attention,
increase retention, and make them think about the content while conveying two different
messages simultaneously. In this research, which is conducted using the qualitative research
method, various case studies were analyzed by examining practical applications within the
framework of visual communication design. This research investigates about the importance
of the reading direction and exemplifies the situation through terms including but not
limited to ambigrams and palindromes, accepted as typographic expressions, and emphasizes
their role in visual communication design. This research also uses implementation
examples and typographic principles on readability to empirically support design knowledge
and provides a model for the design process that serves as a research blueprint. Therefore,
this study questions whether or to what extent it is acceptable to compromise readability
for an effective message transfer. It also questions the practical value of creative typographic
expressions that interact with the reading direction in expanding the possibilities of visual
communication.

İKİ YÖNLÜ OKUNURLUĞUN GÖRSEL İLETİŞİME ETKİSİ*

Öz

Dilbilim ve tipografik tasarımın kesişimi, görsel iletişim tasarımına farklı bir bakış açısı
kazandırmaktadır. Bu araştırma, okuma yönündeki değişiklikler gibi tipografik ifadelerin
görsel iletişimin sınırlarını nasıl etkilediğini araştırmayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu tür tipografik
anlatımın önemi, iki farklı mesajı aynı anda aktarırken hedef kitlenin dikkatini çekmek,
akılda kalıcılığı artırmak ve içerik hakkında düşünmelerini sağlamaktır. Nitel araştırma
yöntemi kullanılarak gerçekleştirilen bu araştırmada, görsel iletişim tasarımı çerçevesinde
pratik uygulamalar incelenerek çeşitli örnek olaylar analiz edilmiştir. Bu araştırmada
okuma yönünün önemi sorgulanmakta ve tipografik ifadeler olarak kabul edilen ambigramlar,
palindromlar gibi ancak bunlarla sınırlı olmamak üzere terimler üzerinden durum
örneklenmektedir. Ayrıca, görsel iletişim tasarımındaki rolleri de vurgulanmaktadır. Bu
araştırma aynı zamanda tasarım bilgisini yorumlayarak desteklemek için okunabilirliğe
ilişkin uygulama örneklerini ve tipografik ilkeleri kullanmaktadır ve tasarım süreci için
de bir model sunar. Dolayısıyla bu çalışma, etkili bir mesaj aktarımı için okunabilirlikten
taviz vermenin kabul edilebilir olup olmadığını veya ne ölçüde kabul edilebilir olduğunu
sorgulamaktadır. Görsel iletişim olanaklarını genişletmede okuma yönü ile etkileşime giren
yaratıcı tipografik ifadelerin pratik değerini de incelemektedir.
