Bu makalede birbiriyle ilişkili iki konu ele alınmaktadır. İlk olarak, günümüzde Kariye Camii olanKhora Manastır Kilisesi’nin bânisi Theodoros Metokhites’in siyasi, entelektüel ve kültürel kimliğiüzerinde durulmaktadır. Adı neredeyse sadece Kariye üzerine konuşulduğu zaman gündeme gelenTheodoros Metokhites’in, dönemin yetenekli büyük bir devlet adamı olmasının dışında, 11. yüzyılınbüyük Bizans filozofu Mihail Psellos’un açtığı yolda antik Yunan felsefesi ve bilimi üzerine çalışanve yazan önemli bir entelektüel olduğu gösterilmektedir. İkinci olarak, Theodoros Metokhites’inmaddi gücü ve manevi iradesinin bir ürünü olan Kariye’nin içinde yer alan mozaik ve freskolarınönemi, Rönesans resim sanatıyla yapılan bir karşılaştırma ile sunulmaktadır. Bizans sanatı üzerineyaygın olan, onun durağan, değişmeyen ve sürekli belli klişeleri tekrar ettiği şeklindeki, “oryantalist”bakış açısıyla ortaya konan analiz ele alınmakta ve bu analizin ne ölçüde doğru olduğu tartışılmaktadır.Böylece hem Theodoros Metokhites’in sadece bir sanat hamisi olmadığı, aynı zamandadöneminin büyük bir devlet adamı ve entelektüeli olduğu gösterilmekte, hem de onun himayesindePalaiologos Dönemi’nin en büyük sanatsal başarısı olan Kariye’deki sanatın önemi ve farkıortaya konmaya çalışılmaktadır.
This article focuses on two related issues: first, the political, intellectual, and cultural identity ofTheodore Metochites, the founder of the Chora Monastery Church (the Kariye Mosque), and second,the importance of the frescoes and mosaics of the Chora. Theodore Metochites, whose namefeatures almost exclusively in relation to the subject of Chora, worked on and wrote about ancientGreek philosophy and science in the tradition of the great 11th century Byzantine philosopherMichael Psellos. The article compares the frescoes and mosaics of the Chora, which are a productof the power and will of Metochites, to Renaissance art. The common analysis of Byzantine art—that it is static, unchanging, and constantly repeating certain clichés that present an “orientalist”point of view—is considered and the accuracy of this analysis was discussed. The article demonstratesthat Theodore Metochites was not only a patron of the arts but also one of the most talentedstatesmen and intellectuals of his time, under whose auspices the importance and varietyof art in the Chora is described as the greatest artistic achievement of the Palaiologan Period.
