A Review of Nursing Thesis on Complementary and Supportive Medicine Practices for Patients with Osteoarthritis: A Systematic Review

Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine nursing thesis on complementary and supportive medicine practices for patients with osteoarthritis (OA) in Türkiye and to guide future related studies and nursing practices. The data in the study were obtained by searching the keywords “osteoarthritis”, “complementary”, “alternative treatment”, “holistic complementary and alternative treatment”, “integrative treatment”, “nursing”, “acupress”, “massage”, “aromatherapy”, “reflexology”, “reiki”, “yoga, ‘herbal treatment’ in the database of the National Thesis Center of the Council of Higher Education after a literature review. A total of 359 thesis were reached as a result of screening with keywords. The study included 10 randomized controlled thesis conducted between 1997 and 2024 in the Department of Nursing, Institute of Health Sciences. According to the results of the study, complementary and supportive medicine practices (hot-cold compress application, ginger compress and flaxseed poultice compress application, aromatherapy massage (St. John's wort oil, black cumin oil, nettle-ginger oil, olive oil), acupressure application and reflexology were found to be effective in pain, fatigue, functional capacity, quality of life, self-efficacy symptoms of individuals diagnosed with osteoarthritis. It was concluded that complementary and supportive medicine practices such as hot and cold compress application, acupressure, aromatherapy (massage) application, and herbal treatment were used in patients with osteoarthritis. These practices were found to have positive effects in reducing pain, increasing self-efficacy and quality of life, decreasing mobility limitation and improving functional status in patients with osteoarthritis.

Osteoartrit’li Hastalar ile İlgili Yapılan Tamamlayıcı ve Destekleyici Tıp Uygulamalarını İçeren Hemşirelik Tezlerinin İncelenmesi: Sistematik Derleme

Abstract

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı Türkiye’de Osteoartrit’li (OA) hastalara yönelik tamamlayıcı ve destekleyici tıp uygulamalarına ilişkin hemşirelik tezlerini inceleyerek gelecekte yapılacak ilgili çalışmalara ve hemşirelik uygulamalarına yol göstermektir. Yöntem: Çalışmada veriler, literatür taraması sonrasında Yükseköğretim Kurulu Ulusal Tez Merkezi veri tabanında "osteoartrit", "tamamlayıcı", "alternatif tedavi", "bütüncül tamamlayıcı ve alternatif tedavi", "integratif tedavi", "hemşirelik", "akupres", "masaj", "aromaterapi", "refleksoloji", "reiki", "yoga, "bitkisel tedavi" anahtar kelimeleri taranarak yapılmıştır. Anahtar kelimeler ile yapılan tarama sonucunda toplam 359 teze ulaşılmıştır. Çalışmaya Sağlık Bilimleri Enstitüsü Hemşirelik Anabilim Dalı'nda 1997-2024 yılları arasında yapılmış 10 randomize kontrollü tez dahil edildi. Bulgular: Çalışma sonuçlarına göre tamamlayıcı ve destekleyici tıp uygulamalarının (sıcak-soğuk kompres uygulama, zencefilli kompres ve keten tohumu lapası kompres uygulama, aromaterapi masajı (kantaron yağı, çörekotu yağı, ısırgan-zencefil yağı, zeytin yağı), akupres uygulaması ve refleksolojinin Osteoartrit tanılı bireylerin ağrı, yorgunluk, fonksiyonel kapasite, yaşam kalitesi, öz yeterlilik semptomlarında etkili olduğu bulunmuştur. Sonuç: Osteoartrit’li hastalarda sıcak ve soğuk kompres uygulama, akupres, aromaterapi (masaj) uygulama, bitkisel tedavi gibi tamamlayıcı ve destekleyici tıp uygulamalarının kullanıldığı sonucuna ulaşıldı. Kullanılan bu uygulamaların; osteoartritli hastalarda ağrıyı azalttığı, öz etkililik ve yaşam kalitesini artırdığı, hareket kısıtlılığını azalttığı ve fonksiyonel durumu iyileştirdiği yönünde olumlu etkilerinin olduğu saptandı.
