The Role of Communication in Premarital Counseling and Marital Adjustment

Abstract

Premarital counseling is regarded as an important preventive intervention that contributes to marital adjustment, communication quality, and relationship satisfaction. The aim of this review study is to examine the role of communication in premarital counseling within the framework of communication psychology. In this context, national and international studies related to premarital counseling, couple communication, conflict resolution, and marital adjustment were reviewed. The findings indicate that premarital counseling improves communication skills and promotes constructive conflict management, thereby contributing to marital adjustment. Furthermore, communication-based interventions may reduce marital burnout and support long-term relational stability. In addition, premarital counseling helps couples develop realistic expectations regarding marriage and is associated with increased relationship satisfaction. The study emphasizes that communication-based preventive interventions may contribute positively to marital quality and family functioning.
