ObjectiveThe Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19), which emergedin the People's Republic of China and turned into aglobal epidemic, affected cancer surgery in our countryas well as in the whole universe. Elective surgerieshave been postponed in many countries affected bythe epidemic. In our study, we aimed to reveal theresults of the malignancy operations we performed inthe Süleyman Demirel University Faculty of Medicine,Surgery Oncology Clinic during the pandemic.Material and MethodPatients who applied to SDU Faculty of MedicineSurgical Oncology Outpatient Clinic and weredecided to be operated were included in the study.Covid-19 test (PCR) was applied to all of themduring preop preparation. In the follow-ups, generalfindings of Covid-19, wound conditions and surgicalfindings were examined. All patients used surgicalmasks before surgery. Doctors and other healthcareprofessionals wore surgical masks and disposablelatex gloves during their visits and examinations.ResultsBetween March 10, 2020 and June 31, 2021, 138patients diagnosed with malignancy were operatedat SDU Faculty of Medicine, Department of SurgicalOncology. None of the preoperative patients hadCovid-19 symptoms (fever, cough or fatigue).Covid-19 (PCR) test was positive in 2 patients(stomach and breast cancer). The positive patientswere isolated and the operation was postponed. NoCovid-19 symptoms were observed in any patient inthe postoperative 15-day period. All patients weredischarged without complications.ConclusionDuring the Covid-19 Pandemic, the correctmanagement of cancer patients within the surgicalindication is important in terms of both preventingdeaths due to emergencies and applying the righttreatment. It has been shown that cancer patientscan be operated safely during the pandemic period,provided that the necessary precautions are taken forthe surgical team and patients.
