<p>Aim: The effects of high fructose corn syrup diet on rat lungs were examined in this study. Material and methods: Twenty-four Wistar Albino female rats were randomly divided into three groups; Group I: corn syrup diet (30% corn sugar solution for 10 weeks orally). Group 2: corn syrup diet and alpha lipoic acid (100 mg/kg, added to diet after four weeks, orally). Group III: control group. The histopathological changes in lungs were evaluated, and malondialdehyde (MDA) and catalase levels were measured in tissue homogenize samples. Among-group comparisons, ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, Mann Whitney-U were used; Bonferroni,Tukey and LSD tests were used for post-hoc analysis. Results: The histopathological changes (hyperemia, edema, lymphoid tissue hyperplasia and inflammatory reaction) in lungs were found statistically different between groups (p = 0.004). While the histopathological changes were increased in Group. I, they were decreased in Group II (p = 0.057). Although MDA levels were statistically different between groups (p &amp;lt;0.005), it was not shown between the groups’catalase levels (p&amp;gt; 0.05). Conclusion: It was shown that corn syrup diet caused histopathological changes in rat lungs, and ALA had an ameliorative effect on these lesions. However further studies are needed to show the mechanisms how corn syrup affects the lungs</p></trans-abstract>

Gereçler ve Yöntem: Yirmi dört adet Wistar Albino dişi rat 3 gruba ayrıldı. Grup 1: Mısır şurubu diyeti (10 hafta %30&#039;luk, oral), Grup 2: Mısır şurubu diyeti +Alfa Lipoik Asit (ALA) (100 mg/kg, 4 haftadan sonra, oral) Grup 3: Kontrol grubu. Deney sonrasında sıçan akciğerlerindeki değişiklikler histopatolojik olarak değerlendirildi. Alınan kan örneklerinde Malondialdehit (MDA) ve Katalaz düzeyleri ölçüldü. Üç grupta elde edilen veriler; Kruskal Wallis, Mann Whitney-U ve ANAVO post hocBonferroni testleri kullanılarak karşılaştırıldı. Bulgular: Akciğer dokusunun histopatolojik (hiperemi, ödem, lenfoid doku hiperplazisi ve inflamatuvar reaksiyon) değerlendirilmesinde gruplar arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı fark mevcuttu (p=0.004). Histopatolojik değişiklikler özellikle Grup I&#039;de artarken, değişikliklerin II.
