The aim of the study is to evaluate thehematological findings in children diagnosed withvitamin B12 deficiency.Materials and MethodsHematological data of children with B12 deficiencywho were examined in Pediatric HematologyDepartment were retrospectively reviewed.ResultsHematological data of one hundred twenty-fourpatients were assessed in our study. Anemia, thrombocytopenia and leucopenia were detected in48 patients, 8 patients and 6 patients, respectively. Two infants presented with prolonged jaundice andhemolytic anemia. The mean vitamin B12 levels of thepatients were 97.3±30.6 (5-140) pg/ml.ConclusionVitamin B12 deficiency is a common disease indeveloping countries and it is mostly of maternalorigin. In our study, vitamin B12 deficiency in mothersof 42 out of 52 infants (80%) were discovered. Thispercentage clearly shows the importance of the vitaminB12 level determination in pregnant women and itstreatment in case of deficiency. Patients with vitaminB12 deficiency might be admitted to the hospital forvarious reasons. Therefore, it is recommended tokeep in mind that vitamin B12 deficiency might bethe base of various diseases, especially for patientspresenting prolonged jaundice and hemolytic anemia.</p>
