The focus of this study is the Turkish province of Ordu.The cinema history of Ordu dates to the early twentieth century. The first film screenings in Ordu took place in such venues as schools and theater halls. Ordu’s first dedicated cinema, Sinematograf Makridi, opened in 1912. Following the population exchange in the aftermath of the First World War, Ordu’s sole cinema was for many years the İhsan Bey Cinema, run by Halis Öge and his son İhsan Öge. That changed with the opening of the Halkevi Cinema in the late 1940s and Millet Cinema and Zafer Cinema in the 1950s. Based on the perspective of New Cinema History, this study traces the story of these cinemas and the other components of Ordu’s cinema history, from the cinema operators and audiences to the films themselves.In the early twentieth century, the cinema experience in Ordu was shaped by Greeks, Armenians, and Turks. The Greek population disappeared with the post-war population exchange, and the Armenian population gradually declined over the following decades but remained significant until the 1980s. Over the course of the century, cinemas were put to different purposes, serving as venues for not only film screenings but also plays and concerts. Since the end of the twentieth century, cinemas have gradually disappeared from Ordu, as they have across Turkey.This study follows Ordu’s cinema adventure through various sources, such as oral sources, local newspapers, memoirs, cinema photographs, and provincial yearbooks, from the beginning of the twentieth century to the 1970s. It shines a light on many little known aspects of cinema history in Ordu and early republican Turkey, from mobile film screenings to the organization and physical characteristics of the first known cinemas, the silent films shown in them, the behavior of the cinema operators and audiences, and cinema practices. In the study, Ordu’s cinema history is addressed on the basis of city, neighborhood, and space. Ordu’s urban dynamics are discussed alongside the traditional relationships on display at the neighborhood level, what cinemas mean spatially for both the city and cinema-going audiences, and the class, cultural, and social dynamics in which cinemas are enmeshed. In this way, the study aims to contribute to the field of Turkish cinema history and our understanding of Ordu’s place within it.
Türkiye’de sinema tarihinin kaynaklarını, büyük oranda dergiler, gazeteler ve İstanbul oluşturmaktadır. Filmlerle ilgili eleştiri yazılarını ve film gösterimlerine ilişkin haberleri konu edinen gazete ve dergiler üzerine şekillenen sinema tarihi sahasında, filmlere yönelik kronolojik bir tarihçilik ve yönetmenlere göre sinemanın dönemleştirilmesi esas almıştır. Sinemanın çok yönlü doğası, mekânsal organizasyonu, kültürel ve toplumsal dinamiklerle ilişkisi, seyirci özneleri, taşradaki sinema deneyimi gibi konular, uzunca bir dönem Türkiye’de yürütülen sinema tarihçiliğinin sahasında kendine yer edinmemiştir. Kısıtlı kaynaklar üzerinde yükselen sinema tarihi sahasının zenginleştirilmesinde, dahası kaynak eksikliğinden doğan kimi tartışmalı konuların aydınlatılmasında mevzubahis konuların önemi bilhassa 2000’li yıllarla, yeni sinema tarihi ile gündeme gelmiştir. Yeni sinema tarihine yaslanan bu araştırmanın odağında, Ordu ili yer almaktadır. Ordu’nun sinema serüveni, yirminci yüzyıl başlarından 1950’li yılların sonlarına kadar, sözlü kaynaklar, yerel gazeteler, anı kitapları, sinema fotoğrafları, il yıllıkları gibi çeşitli kaynaklarla birlikte ele alınmıştır. Çalışma, sinema tarihi sahasına, seyyar film gösterimlerden, bilinen ilk sinema salonlarının organizasyonuna, salonların fiziksel özelliklerine, sinemada gösterilen sessiz filmlere, salon işletmecilerinin ve seyirci öznelerinin davranışlarına kadar kısıtlı bilgiye sahip olduğumuz erken Cumhuriyet Dönemi Türkiyesi’ndeki pek çok sinema pratiğine dair konulara, Ordu özelinde küçük bir kapı aralamaktadır. Araştırmada, Ordu’nun sinema tarihine, filmler, sinema salonlarının işletmecileri, çalışanları, sinema anıları, sinemanın kent, mahalle ve mekân fenomenleriyle ilişkisi çerçevesinden bakılmıştır. Bu anlamda, sinema salonları; localar, mevkiler, salondaki düzenin sağlanması gibi konular etrafında, sınıfsal, kültürel ve toplumsal dinamiklerle tartışılmıştır. Araştırma, bahsi geçen konularla, Türkiye’deki sinema tarihi alanına Ordu’nun özgün koşulları bağlamıyla katkı sunmayı amaçlamaktadır.
