In this article Chaudhuri and Finn attempt to explain one of the characteristics of New Iranian Cinema, a certain kind of ambiguous, epiphanic image that they call an “open image,” as seen in the context of the political and cultural climate of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The authors use Pasolini’s theory of poetic realism, Paul Schrader’s notion of the arrested image, and Deleuze’s theory of the timeimage to define the open image and to explore the open image in specific films from the New Iranian Cinema.
