TRANSLATOR’S VOICE AND CREATIVE COLLABORATION: A STUDY ON LITERARY TRANSLATION

Öz

This study analyses Theo Hermans' translator's voice theory on some passages taken from the English translation of Sabahattin Ali's The Madonna with the Fur Coat by Maureen Freely and Alexander Dawe. The study covers the special description section where the protagonist Raif Efendi is first introduced. Theo Hermans argues that translators can create a double voice through explicit and implicit means and that the reader hears the voice of the translator rather than the author of the text. Translators' lexical and structural preferences, translator interventions and their unique narrative styles have been the factors analysed in terms of translation practice. The extent to which the translator's voice reflects the character picture in the author's mind in an effort to reach the deeper meaning obtained through a hermeneutical discussion has significance for the analysis. In the chapters selected for the study, the author's simple but poetic language presents the character and his relationship with the society he belongs to by creating a vivid scene with a rhythmic tone, while the data obtained from the analysis of the translated text showed that the poetic and aesthetic language in the translated text turned into a flatter narrative and thus lost the effect of the vivid imagery desired to be created about the character. In addition, it was found that the insensitive attitude of society towards seemingly ordinary people could not be expressed clearly enough in the translated text and thus the feeling of social conflict that the author wanted to give could not be created. As a result of the study, it was determined that the translators intended the source text to be understood by the target reader, but the in-depth narration was not sufficiently reflected in the target language. This study is a field study to determine the extent to which the author and translator voices overlap, and which factors are responsible for the points of divergence.

Çevirmen Sesi ve Yaratıcı Ortaklık: Edebi Çeviri Üzerine Bir İnceleme

Öz

Bu çalışma Sabahattin Ali’nin Kürk Mantolu Madonna adlı romanın Maureen Freely ve Alexander Dawe tarafından yapılan İngilizce çevirisinden alınan bazı bölümler üzerinde Theo Hermans’ın çevirmenin sesi teorisini tahlil etmektedir. Araştırma baş karakter Raif Efendi’nin ilk olarak tanıtıldığı özel tasvir bölümünü kapsamaktadır. Theo Hermans çevirmenlerin açık (explicit) ve örtük (implicit) yollarla bir çift seslilik (double voice) yaratabileceğini ve okuyucuların metnin yazarındansa çevirmenin sesini duyduklarını ifade etmektedir. Çevirmenlerin sözcüksel ve yapısal tercihleri, çevirmen müdahaleleri ve kendilerine özgü anlatı tarzları çeviri pratiği açısından incelenen faktörler olmuştur. Hermenötik bir tartışma yürütülerek elde edilen derin anlama ulaşma çabası içinde çevirmen sesinin yazarın aklındaki karakter resmini ne derecede yansıttığı analiz açısından önemli olmuştur. Araştırma için seçilen bölümlerde yazarın dikkat çeken yalın ama şiirsel dili ritmik bir ton ile baş karakteri ve karakterin ait olduğu toplumla ilişkisini canlı bir sahne yaratarak sunmakta iken, çeviri metnin analizi sonucu elde edilen veriler çeviri metinde şiirsel ve estetik dilin daha düz bir anlatıma dönüştüğü ve dolayısıyla karakter hakkında oluşturulmak istenen canlı imgelemin etkisini kaybettiği görülmüştür. Ayrıca, çeviri metinde toplumun sıradan gözüken insanlara karşı takındığı duyarsız tutumun yeterince net ifade edilemediği ve dolayısıyla yazarın vermek istediği toplumsal çatışma hissiyatının oluşturulamadığı tespit edilmiştir. Çalışma sonucunda, çevirmenlerin kaynak metnin hedef okuyucu tarafından anlaşılmasının niyetlendiği fakat derinlikli anlatımın hedef dile yeterince yansıtılamadığı tespit edilmiştir. Bu çalışma yazar ve çevirmen seslerinin ne derecede örtüştüklerini, ayrışma noktalarının hangi faktörlerden kaynaklandığını belirlemeye yönelik bir alan çalışması olmuştur.
