Determination of Oral Health Status and Oral Health Related Quality of Life of Type 2 Diabetic Patients Applying to a Family Health Center

Abstract

Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the oral health status and oral health-related quality of life of diabetic patients who applied to a Family Health Center. Method: The study is descriptive. The universe of the study consists of 1568 diabetic patients registered to a Family Health Center, and 296 patients were reached within the scope of the sample. The data collection tool consists of ‘Introductory Information’, ‘Questions About Oral Health’, and ‘Questions About Oral Health-Related Quality of Life Scale’. The total score that can be obtained from this scale varies between 16 and 80 points, and as the score increases, the quality of life related to oral and dental health increases positively. Data were collected by face-to-face interview method. Percentage, average, and normal distribution tests were used in the analysis of the data. Statistical significance level was determined as p≤0.05. Findings: The average age of the participants was determined as 54.5±13.7. In the study, it was determined that the most important reason for not going to the dentist was fear/shyness. The total mean score of the participants on the Oral Health Related Quality of Life Scale was found to be 41.6±14.2. It was determined that the total scores of the Oral Health Related Quality of Life Scale varied according to the participants' characteristics such as gender and not having any problems with oral health. No statistically significant difference was found between the total scale scores according to the participants' characteristics such as education and income status (p≥0.05). Conclusion and Recommendations: The total scale score means of the participants were found to be at a moderate level. It is recommended that diabetic patients be given training on the importance of oral health and that more comprehensive studies be conducted on oral health.

BİR AİLE SAĞLIK MERKEZİ’NE BAŞVURAN TİP 2 DİYABETLİ HASTALARIN AĞIZ SAĞLIĞI DURUMLARI VE AĞIZ SAĞLIĞI İLE İLİŞKİLİ YAŞAM KALİTELERİNİN BELİRLENMESİ

Abstract

Amaç: Bu çalışma, bir Aile Sağlık Merkezi’ne başvuran diyabetli hastaların ağız sağlığı durumları ve ağız sağlığı ile ilişkili yaşam kalitelerinin belirlenmesi amacıyla yapılmıştır. Yöntem: Çalışma tanımlayıcı tiptedir. Araştırmanın evrenini bir Aile Sağlık Merkezi’ne kayıtlı 1568 diyabetli hasta oluşturmakta olup örneklem kapsamında 296 hastaya ulaşılmıştır. Veri toplama aracı ‘Tanıtıcı Bilgiler’, ‘Ağız Sağlığına Yönelik Sorular’, ‘Ağız Sağlığı ile İlişkili Yaşam Kalitesi Ölçeği’nden oluşmaktadır. Bu ölçekten alınabilecek toplam puan 16 ile 80 puan arasında değişmektedir ve alınan puan arttıkça ağız ve diş sağlığına bağlı yaşam kalitesi de olumlu yönde artmaktadır. Veriler yüz yüze görüşme yöntemiyle toplanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde yüzde, ortalama, normal dağılıma uygun testlerden yararlanılmıştır. İstatistiksel anlamlılık düzeyi p≤0.05 olarak belirlenmiştir. Bulgular: Katılımcıların yaş ortalaması 54,5±13,7 olarak belirlenmiştir. Çalışmada en önemli diş hekimine gitmeme nedeni olarak korkma/çekinme olduğu saptanmıştır. Katılımcıların Ağız Sağlığı ile İlişkili Yaşam Kalitesi Ölçeği toplam puan ortalaması 41,6±14,2 olarak bulunmuştur. Katılımcıların cinsiyet, ağız sağlığına yönelik herhangi bir problem sahip olmama gibi özelliklerine göre Ağız Sağlığı ile İlişkili Yaşam Kalitesi Ölçeği toplam puanlarının değiştiği belirlenmiştir. Katılımcıların eğitim, gelir durumu gibi özelliklerine göre ölçek toplam puan ortalamaları arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir farklılık bulunmamıştır (p≥0,05). Sonuç ve Öneriler: Katılımcıların ölçek toplam puan ortalamaları orta düzeyde bulunmuştur. Diyabetli hastalarda ağız sağlığının önemi ile ilgili eğitim verilmesi, ağız sağlığına yönelik daha kapsamlı çalışmaların yapılması önerilmektedir.
