Bu çalışma, modern dönemde özellikle Batı’da sekülerleşme, küreselleşme ve bireyselleşmenin etkisiyle belirginleşen yeni dinî hareketler ile Sünnî tasavvuf geleneği arasındaki ilişkiyi, literatürde zaman zaman dile getirilen benzerlik iddiaları ekseninde kavramsal ve karşılaştırmalı bir yaklaşımla ele almaktadır. Araştırma, yeni dinî hareketlerin ortaya çıkışını hazırlayan sosyokültürel zemini dikkate alırken karşılaştırmayı tekil örnekler üzerinden değil, bu hareketlerin genel karakteristikleri üzerinden kurmayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu bağlamda yeni dinî hareketlerde öne çıkan karizmatik liderlik, kurtuluş öğretisi, sezgisel bilgi vurgusu ve senkretik/eklektik yapı gibi özelliklerin; tasavvufta görülen şeyh–mürid ilişkisi, nefis tezkiyesi ve bâtınî tecrübe gibi unsurlarla bazı şekilsel benzerlikler taşıdığı kabul edilmektedir. Bununla birlikte analiz, söz konusu benzerliklerin daha çok görünüş düzeyinde kaldığını ve teolojik dayanaklar, yöntem, amaç ve normatif çerçeve bakımından iki yapı arasında belirgin ayrışmalar bulunduğunu göstermektedir. Tasavvuf, İslâmî kaynaklara bağlı, ibadet–ilim–ahlâk ekseninde nefsi ıslahı ve Allah’a yakınlaşmayı hedefleyen normatif bir manevî disiplin olarak konumlanmaktadır. Buna karşılık yeni dinî hareketler, çoğu zaman bireysel tatmin ve başarı odaklı söylemler geliştiren, farklı inanç ve pratikleri eklektik biçimde bir araya getirebilen ve seküler eğilimler taşıyabilen yapılardır. Bu nedenle tasavvufun yeni dinî hareketler bağlamında değerlendirilmesi kavramsal açıdan sorunlu görünmektedir. Ayrıca çalışma, popüler kültür içinde “tasavvufî” bir dil ve sembolizm kullanan yeni oluşumların Sünnî tasavvuf geleneğiyle özdeşleştirilmesinin kavramsal karışıklığa yol açabileceğini vurgulamakta; tasavvufun tarihsel ve normatif çerçevesinin korunması gerektiğine işaret etmektedir.
This study examines the relationship between new religious movements that have become prominent in the modern period - especially in the West under the influence of secularization, globalization, and individualization - and the Sunni Sufi tradition, through a conceptual and comparative approach shaped by similarity claims occasionally voiced in the literature. While taking into account the socio-cultural context that facilitated the emergence of new religious movements, the study aims to ground the comparison not in single cases but in the general characteristics of these movements. In this regard, it is acknowledged that features highlighted in new religious movements - such as charismatic leadership, doctrines of salvation, an emphasis on intuitive knowledge, and a syncretic/eclectic structure - display certain formal similarities to elements observed in Sufism, including the shaykh–disciple relationship, purification of the self (tazkiyat al-nafs), and inner spiritual experience. Nevertheless, the analysis shows that these similarities remain largely superficial and that there are clear divergences between the two in terms of theological foundations, method, aims, and normative framework. Sufism is positioned as a normative spiritual discipline rooted in Islamic sources, oriented toward moral cultivation and the reformation of the self through worship, knowledge, and ethics, with the ultimate aim of drawing closer to God. By contrast, new religious movements often develop discourses centered on individual satisfaction and success, combine diverse beliefs and practices in eclectic ways, and may exhibit more secular tendencies. For these reasons, interpreting Sufism within the framework of new religious movements appears conceptually problematic. The study also emphasizes that equating new formations in popular culture that employ a “Sufi” idiom and symbolism with the Sunni Sufi tradition can lead to conceptual confusion, and it underscores the need to preserve Sufism’s historical and normative framework.
